On Sep 24, 2018, a pleasure yacht was crushed by the 'Xanthos' (ENI-No.: 02324571), on the Amsterdam-Rhine-Canal near Breukelen. The captain of the container barge which had sailed from Amsterdam at 2.30 p.m. totally misjudged the slight bend in the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal at Breukelen where the yacht was floating. Three boys were walking on the shore in panic who had obviously jumped off their boat when they noticed that the big ship was coming straight for them. The screams of the boys had an effect. At one point the captain of the container ship apparently knew what was going on and threw the helm thus avoiding a frontal collision. The ship headed back to the middle of the canal and went off. The boat could be secured to the shore and left after about an hour towards Loenen. The bow on the starboard side has been badly damaged. The wooden structure was broken and the floor was also warped. The container ship has sailed to Duisburg. As soon as the skipper is back, he will be interrogated what exactly happened. Rijkswaterstaat reported that during an investigation by a patrol boat there was no damage found on the shore of the canal. The quay remained intact.
