Avoid New York-New Jersey for delays, Hapag-Lloyd advises shippers GERMANY's Hapag-Lloyd is telling shippers to avoid the Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) because of delays it expects to continue until mid-September, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.
PANYNJ terminal delays started in June, when Maher Terminals ran into glitches in their new computer system, diverting ships to other terminals, which strained their capacity and caused chassis shortages.
Hapag-Lloyd's is the strongest public statement yet from carriers in response to two months of delays that have caused almost-daily truck waits of several hours at New York-New Jersey container terminals.
In a notice to trade, Hapag-Lloyd said delays include marine terminal system updates and rollouts, trucking shortages accompanying new hours of service regulations, vacation-season shortages of longshore, and construction and bunching of ship calls at marine terminals.
"Both local and rail cargo are affected," Hapag-Lloyd told customers. "In efforts to minimise commercial exposure to NY-NJ and restore our service to our customers, we strongly suggest rerouting cargo where possible."
Hapag-Lloyd recommended Montreal, Halifax or Norfolk for cargo to and from Europe and the Mediterranean. Halifax or Norfolk was recommended for cargo to and from the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, and Norfolk and Baltimore or Savannah for Latin America cargo.
Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai and NYK have rerouted their weekly New York Express service from Maher to New York Container Terminal on Staten Island.
