Austal has secured AUD 245 million to enhance production for a AUD 4 billion military landing craft program for the Australian Defence Force.
Australian shipbuilding company Austal has secured a loan financing of 245 million Australian dollars (approximately 172 million US dollars) to enhance the production infrastructure for its heavy landing craft program valued at around 4 billion Australian dollars for the Australian Defence Force.
The financing, provided through the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) supported by the Australian government, will be used to establish new shipbuilding infrastructure at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) facilities in Henderson, Western Australia.
Eight military landing craft will be constructed.
The financing will support the Landing Craft Heavy (LCH) program, aimed at increasing the Australian Defence Force's capacity to transport military personnel, vehicles, and heavy equipment from sea to shore.
Under the project to be conducted by Austal Defence Shipbuilding Australia, the construction of eight heavy landing craft, each approximately 100 meters long, is planned.
Each vessel will have a capacity to carry over 500 tons of military personnel, vehicles, and equipment. The ships can be used to deploy various military assets, including armored vehicles and long-range precision strike systems, to coastal areas.
The program, valued at approximately 4 billion Australian dollars, is targeted for completion by 2038.
Henderson Shipyard's capacity will be increased.
With the provided loan, new production and assembly facilities will be established at the shipbuilding complex in Henderson. The capacity of existing facilities will be expanded to create infrastructure suitable for the modular production of large-scale military vessels.
The blocks of the ships will be prepared in existing and new production facilities, with final assembly and launching operations conducted within the Australian Marine Complex.
Under the financing agreement, the financing costs related to the loan will be covered by the Australian government. This arrangement aims to reduce Austal's financial burden on working capital throughout the project duration.
The availability of the loan financing will be contingent upon the completion of necessary documentation and the fulfillment of standard contractual conditions.
Australia strengthens military shipbuilding.
The Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement signed between Austal and the Australian government in 2025 aims to develop the country's military ship production capacity in the long term.
Under this agreement, Austal has been designated as the strategic shipbuilding entity in Western Australia.
In addition to the heavy landing craft program, the production of medium-class landing craft is also among the company's long-term defense projects.
Austal CEO Paddy Gregg stated that the new financing will support the development of the necessary production facilities for the heavy landing craft program.
Gregg expressed that the investment will provide long-term contributions to local shipbuilding capacity, employment, and economic activities in Western Australia.
NRFC CEO David Gall emphasized that the investment will strengthen Australia's domestic capabilities in military ship production and help reduce reliance on foreign shipyards.
The new investment represents a significant step toward Australia's goal of increasing domestic production in the defense industry and establishing the Henderson region as a long-term military shipbuilding hub.
