Atlas Air orders 20 Airbus A350 freighters, becoming the largest customer for this new-generation cargo aircraft, with options for 20 more.
Atlas Air Worldwide has ordered 20 Airbus A350 freighters with options for 20 more, becoming the largest customer for Airbus' new-generation cargo aircraft, reported Mumbai's STAT Trade Times.
The deal was signed in Toulouse on March 16 and marks a major step in Atlas Air's long-term growth strategy. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034. Chief Executive Michael Steen stated that the A350F will complement the company's fleet of 747s, 777s, and 767s, significantly expanding capacity.
Mr. Steen noted that Airbus offered earlier delivery slots, advanced technology, and environmental benefits compared to Boeing's 777-8 freighter. The A350F is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines and is designed to reduce carbon emissions and fuel burn while offering strong payload and range.
Atlas Air's current fleet consists of 113 aircraft, including aging 747-400s, which will remain in service. Mr. Steen emphasized that the A350Fs are intended for expansion rather than replacement. He added that ocean freight disruptions and long-term demand trends support investment in new freighters.
Airbus stated that the A350F is the only freighter fully compliant with ICAO's enhanced CO2 standards taking effect in 2027. It features the largest main deck cargo door in the industry and an optimized fuselage for pallets and containers.
Airbus has secured 81 firm orders for the A350F from 13 customers, while Boeing's 777-8F has 68 orders. The Atlas Air deal underscores Airbus' entry into the freighter market with a major customer and positions Atlas as the world's largest wide-body freighter operator.
