APM Terminals Mexico reports 35% container growth in Lazaro Cardenas and advances electrification in Yucatan, enhancing operational efficiency.
APM Terminals Mexico reported a 35% year-on-year increase in container throughput at its Lazaro Cardenas terminal during the first half of 2026, handling 684,599 TEUs between January and June. Meanwhile, its Yucatan operation moved more than 41,000 TEUs as both facilities pressed ahead with modernization and port electrification.
The Lazaro Cardenas figure compares with 508,506 TEUs recorded over the same period in 2025, reflecting a gain of 176,093 TEUs. Transshipment cargo accounted for a substantial share of the volume: the terminal handled 416,102 TEUs of transshipment traffic by the end of June, which is roughly 61% of all containers moved during the half. Full-container movement, which is more directly tied to commercial trade flows, rose by 37% over the same period.
The company attributed the higher volumes in part to an ongoing modernization program across its Mexican operations, centered on automation, digitalization, and process improvements aimed at expanding cargo-handling capacity and sustaining throughput.
In southeastern Mexico, APM Terminals Yucatan moved 41,442 TEUs during the first six months of 2026 while a separate modernization project continued. The company stated that the upgrade is taking place alongside broader port infrastructure expansion in the region and is designed to prepare the terminal for anticipated growth in commercial and logistical activity.
Beatriz Yera, General Director of APM Terminals Mexico, linked the results to sustained investment in infrastructure and technology.
"The growth we are registering in our terminals reflects our ability to respond to customer needs and the evolution of international trade," Yera said in a statement. "Investment in infrastructure, automation, and technology, accompanied by the talent of our collaborators, allows us to offer greater operational efficiency while contributing to the development of logistical ecosystems and the communities where we are present. We are convinced that generating shared prosperity also implies promoting opportunities for talent and building long-term relationships that favor sustainable and inclusive growth."
Beyond capacity expansion, the company noted that the energy transition is reshaping its operations. In Mexico, APM Terminals is working to optimize energy consumption, electrify equipment and operations, and incorporate renewable sources, as part of a wider goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2040.
The Yucatan terminal holds a distinct role in that strategy. The company indicated that it was selected as one of three APM Terminals facilities worldwide to pilot new electrification solutions.
The first-half results point to two different phases of the company's operations in Mexico. Lazaro Cardenas is registering double-digit growth with a heavy reliance on transshipment traffic, while Yucatan advances a modernization effort that will also serve as a proving ground for technologies aimed at reducing emissions from port activity.
