APM Terminal Suez box shop shut by protesters, canal offers rebates APM TERMINALS' Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) was shut down by demonstrators, who blocked the gate in protest over death sentences of 21 rioters deemed responsible for the 75 spectators killed at a recent Cairo-Port Said football match.

The terminal has since been re-opened, but more trouble is expected on or after March 9 in Port Said when a Cairo court sentences the other convicted rioters implicated in the deaths and thousands of spectator injuries.

Local reports suggest that up to 25 ships were diverted from the blockaded hub terminal and had to discharge transshipment at the Israeli ports of Eilat and Ashdod, reported London's Containerisation International.

The protesters blocked the entrance to the port and induced SCCT workers to join the strike, shutting down operations, said the report.

Due to the interruption of work, the Suez Canal decided that a number of ships affected will not have to pay transit fees on their return.
