The Iranian fishing vessel Azini was hijacked by pirates off Somalia's coast on October 29, with crew safety currently unknown.
The Indian Ocean Maritime Security Centre (MSCIO) announced that the Iranian fishing vessel Azini was hijacked by armed pirates on October 29 off the northeastern coast of Somalia. In the warning numbered 161/26 dated October 31, it was stated that the security situation of the crew is unknown.
In the Centre's update, it was reported that the vessel was approaching a route commonly used by maritime trade traffic. It is assessed that Azini could be used as a mother ship to support the pirates in attacking other vessels. The European Union's ATALANTA Operation is continuing its investigation into the incident.
According to a news report by Associated Press dated November 1, based on information from a Puntland maritime police official, there were 21 Iranian crew members and two Somali security personnel on board the vessel. This number was not included in the MSCIO's initial warning.
MSCIO has requested vessels operating in the region to enhance their vigilance, comply with BMP-MS practices regarding maritime security, and report any suspicious activities without delay. The Centre's statement highlights the additional risk that the reported hijacking of the fishing vessel poses in terms of commercial maritime transportation.
