THE 20,568-TEU Madrid Maersk, one of the newest generation of Triple-E vessels from Maersk Line and one of the largest containerships in the world, docked at Terminal 9 of Modern Terminals marking a milestone for the terminal operator and the Port of Hong Kong.
'The Madrid Maersk's maiden call at Hong Kong highlights the operating capabilities of the port as an international maritime hub and reinforces Modern Terminals' competitiveness as a major player in the Region," said Modern Terminals managing director Peter Levesque.
'This is an exciting moment for our company having made significant investments in our quay and landside infrastructure over the past two years to cater for the next generation of mega vessels," he said.
Said Maersk Line Asia-Pacific chief Robbert van Trooijen: 'We are very proud of the Madrid Maersk. To deliver on our growth strategy we need new capacity.
"Our new vessels complement our fleet and will replace older and less efficient tonnage. They provide efficiency and economy of scale in specific trades and add flexibility across geographies,' said Mr van Trooijen.
The second generation Triple-E vessels have greater fuel efficiency due to ultra-long stroke main engines with large diameter propellers and installation of waste heat recovery system being 35 per cent more efficient that other ships in service.
The Madrid Maersk is deployed on Maersk's AE2 service with a port rotation of Hong Kong, Shenzhen-Yantian, Xingang, Qingdao, Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen-Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Algeciras, Felixstowe, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Algeciras, Singapore and Hong Kong.
