THE 1,740-TEU Hansa Brandenburg was adrift and ablaze in the Indian Ocean yesterday, having suffered a serious fire en route from Singapore to Durban, reports Seatrade Global.

All 17 crewmen were reported safe, having been picked up by Hermann Buss-owned 2,209-TEU Donau Trader, reportedly bound for Singapore from Cape Town at the time.

The Liberian-flagged vessel, built in 2003 and once known as the Maersk Auckland, was last reported 200 miles northeast of Mauritius.

This follows the fire and sinking of the 8,000-TEU MOL Comfort in recent days, which first split in two before going down to the bottom in the Indian Ocean off the Oman and Yemen coasts.
