ALIBABA's logistics unit Cainiao is partnering with Aviastar-Tu and Pochta Russia to commence freighter flights with the goal of speeding up the transport e-commerce goods between China and Russia.
According to a Reuters report, Cainiao will lease seven freighters from the two Russian companies to operate daily flights from China to Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Krasnoyarsk on behalf of AliExpress Russia.
The move is intended to reduce delivery times for orders from Russia to China to 10 days, London's Air Cargo News reported.
Last month, Russian express airline Atran added its sixth freighter to create extra capacity to cater for an 'e-commerce bonanza'. The company said that the extra freighter would help it meet growing demand for e-commerce shipments, including mail, between China, Russia and CIS states.
As part of its e-commerce push, Volga-Dnepr formed a partnership with Cainiao last year. The partnership saw Volga-Dnepr-owned Atran Airlines launch a weekly service from the technology hub, Hangzhou, which is also an important e-commerce gateway, to Riga in Latvia.
