A First From Sanmar!
A brief interview
with Pınar Gürün
SeaNews: Is Sanmar dedi-
cated to tug building as ship-
yard?
Pınar Gürün:
Yes, we pro-
duce only the special-purpose
vessels, such as tug boats,
mooring boats, pilot boats and
similar vessels.
SeaNews: You always pre-
ferred Robert Allan designs
for tugs constructed at
Sanmar. Is there a special
reason fort his choice?
Pınar Gürün:
Yes, we used
Robert Allan designs for
almost all of the vessels we
produced. Since the first vessel
we built, we have continued
to use Robert Allan designs,
unless there is a particular
request from a customer.It is
a proven company and all of
it’s designs are well-known in
the world. They are veterans in
this regard and we have a very
good relationship.
You have been using ASD
Propulsion fort he tugs pro-
duced. Can we see Voith propul-
sion in the future??
ASD system used to date in line
with customer demands. Voith is
also prefferrable when there is
demand from customers.
SeaNews: Recently you signed
a deal to produce the first
LNG tugboat of the world.
Can you evaluate in terms of
risk of the use of LNG as fuel
in a tugboat and cost/profit
ratio?
Pınar Gürün:
Unfortunately,
we can not answer this ques-
tion. LNG system manufac-
turer, Rolls-Royce, the buyer
has a confidentiality agree-
ment between the firm and the
Sanmar.
SeaNews: If we evaluate brief-
ly tug market in the world in
general and in Turkey particu-
larly, given the crisis, how are
we doing?
Pınar Gürün:
Sanmar Shipping
in Turkey believe that there is
the greatest potential in the
Sanmar Constructs World’s First
LNG Powered Escort Tugs
Innovation
Sanmar is constructing
the world’s first Liq-
uid Natural Gas (LNG)
powered escort tugs. The
vessels have been ordered
by Buksér og Berging AS
of Norway and will enter
into service in late 2013.
BB has signed a long
term charter with Statoil
ASA, the international
energy company, and
Gassco, the operator of
the gas transportation
network off the Norwe-
gian coast.
The LNG system is
designed by AGA Cryo
and integrated with the
Rolls-Royce propul-
sion system. This single
tank LNG system has
got full gas redundancy
i.e. no diesel back up is
required. The vessels will
also be equipped with
two Rolls Royce azimuth
propellers.
The operational benefits
of a gas fuelled propul-
sion system are a cleaner
engine room, less waste
oil and no “switch over”
problems. Environmen-
tal benefits of S.I. gas
engines, incorporated in
the new design, are:
•92% reduced NOx emis-
sion
•17% reduced GHG
emission
•98-100% reduced SOx
emission
•98% reduced particu-
lates
•Compliant with Tier III
regulations
Also, the new hull and
propulsion system will
achieve up to 20% higher
thrust efficiency com-
pared to standard designs.

construction of special purpose
vessels. There are many pri-
vate companies that build tug
in Turkey today. All the com-
panies are trying to increase
its market share in the world
rejoicing in Turkey. Everyone
is trying to increase its market
share by trying to do better in
its own possibilities. In the first
4 months of 2013 despite the
crisis we broke our own record
by delivery of seven boats. We
continued to invest.
SeaNews: Are your Orders
coming mostly from devel-
oped markets or from the
emerging markets?
Mostly developed markets,
our sales are mostly to the
European market.
