After the 'Doña Mercedes' of the Venezuelan shipping company Grand Cacique II was transferred to Trinidad Tobago flag and renoamed 'Galleons Passage' in January 2018 due to financial difficulties, it has to be taken China for repairs of the damaged propellers and transmission shafts. The catamaran ferry had served the route Puerto La Cruz - Punta de Piedras - Puerto La Cruz since December 2016. During trials in China, its propellers were damaged, which caused a malfunction of the transmission shafts of the engine, as well as the aft tubes. Currently the ferry remained stuck in Santiago de Cuba where it berthed on May 27, 2018. The Schulte Marine Concept (SMC) which operates offices in China noted that the buyer was informed about a 'high temperature' problem and about the fact the aft tubes and transmission shafts were not replaced. At the time of the SMC evaluation, the vessel was removed from the Venezuelan flag.
