On the Temse in East-Vlaandern the Belgian flagged, self propelled barge "Penhoet", 738 ts (EU-No.: 06002683), allided with a pillar of the Schelde-Bornem-Bridge on March 14, 2017, at 11 a.m. She was enroute from Ghent to Valencienne Weert. The pushed unit of the barge train broke lose and suffered water ingress. The master managed to get his ship to the shore where he, his pregnant wife and a child were taken off by the fire brigade. Attempts to save the barge stuck at the bridge failed. She had suffered immediately water ingress and was completely submerged at the time of the high tide at 3 p.m. The ship traffic was allowed to pass the site with caution, and also the traffic on the bridge could continue.
