SOUTH Korean and Finnish premiers Jung Hong-won and Alexander Stubb, recently celebrated the signing of the 50th order for NAPA-DSME Power, a jointly developed solution for fuel saving and eco-efficiency in ship operation.
Finland's leading maritime software house, NAPA Group, and Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) have been working together to provide fuel saving optimisation software to the international shipping industry since early 2011.
Prime Minister Stubb and a Finnish business delegation attended the ceremony in Seoul. The leaders of the two nations joined vice president and head of DSME's basic design team, Odin Kwon, and NAPA president Juha Heikinheimo.
As part of DSME's Green Ship concept, the collaboration between the two nations directly supports efforts to reduce bunker fuel costs, the highest expense in running a ship vessel.
NAPA-DSME Power is used to obtain the most optimal trim, route, speed profile, and engine configuration for any given voyage. It provides an overview of fleet efficiency, including tools for detailed analysis of hull and engine performance, and monitors ship energy efficiency.
This data is accessible to officers on-board and to teams ashore to aid decisions and enable efficiency optimisation in "real-time."
During a tour of DSME's shipyard Mr Kwon told the Finnish Prime Minister and delegation: "NAPA-DSME Power is integral to our Green Ship concept and it is a significant milestone that the system has now been part of 50 newbuild vessel deals.
"This illustrates the increasing focus on fuel efficiency across the industry by its direct contribution to fuel consumption reduction."
Mr Heikinheimo said the collaboration in smart solutions like NAPA-DSME Power are making a huge contribution to the on-going effort of the industry to improve ship safety and eco-efficiency.
"With eco-efficiency software, such as NAPA-DSME Power, up to 30 per cent savings can be achieved or validated in ship operating costs. Taking into account the quantity of fuel burned daily by ships, even a three per cent saving in fuel consumption results in remarkable cost savings."
