ANTWERP's Seatrade has ordered two "containerships" with a high reefer capacity as it ramps up its fleet renewal programme for existing and new trade lanes under the company's "Fast, Direct and Dedicated" initiative.
Each vessel has a capacity of 2,200 TEU, enabling it to carry 12,000 pallets in refrigerated containers both on deck and below through the use of a unique of a water cooling system, reported Lloyd's List.
"A standard container vessel cannot do this as it does not have the ventilation capacity below deck," said chief executive Yntze Buitenwerf.
"We do not consider this a container vessel. It is a reefer vessel, which carries the cargo (100 per cent) in containers," he said.
"Our vessels will have up to 550 slots available for 40-foot reefers without water cooling and almost 700 with water cooling, allowing for 11,000 and 14,000 pallets respectively."
Scheduled for delivery in 2016, the ships are being built at the Yangfan Group's facility in Zhousan, China.
