THE Marseille-Fos giant Drydock, closed 15 years ago, will be reopen in the autumn after a EUR28 million (US$31.7 million) state-funded renovation to be completed in September, reports London's Tanker Operator.
The dry dock opened in 1975 but was closed after 25 years when the market moved east. Work started early last year under a plan to reintroduce a repair and maintenance base for the world's biggest ships.
The 465-metre long, 85-metre wide drydock is the third largest in the world after Lisbon and Dubai. A 25-year franchise has gone to San Giorgio del Porto, the Mediterranean's biggest shiprepairer and its unit Chantier Naval de Marseille.
Half of the project finance has been provided by the France through two regional government authorities. The balance is coming from the port authority's own funds and through a EUR5.9 million loan from the state-owned Caisse des Depots.
