THE Port of Tokyo posted a 11 per cent decline in container volume in January to 323,729 TEU in foreign trade year on year, but 4.8 per cent increase to 36,514 TEU in domestic trade, according to the latest figures made available to IHS Maritime 360.
But in foreign trade, Tokyo exported 978,336 tonnes of cargo in January, up 13.2 per cent, and imported 2.595 million tonnes of cargo, a decline of 16.6 per cent.
Cargo through Japan's largest container port Tokyo fell 7.3 per cent year on year in January to 6.57 million tonnes, according to figures released by the Tokyo metropolitan government.
Of the 6.579 million tonnes, 3.57 million tonnes came from foreign trade, down 10.1 per cent year on year while the remaining three million tonnes came from domestic trade, down 3.7 per cent.
A total of 406 ocean-going ships, including 375 containerships, entered Tokyo in January, down 10.6 per cent while 1,557 domestic vessels entered the port, down 3.5 per cent.
