MAERSK's free-standing port operator APM Terminals (APMT) has officially opened the world's first fully automated container terminal in Rotterdam on Friday in the presence of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander.
APMT said the terminal has 48 automated rail mounted gantry cranes, a dedicated barge terminal and on-dock rail facilities to move 55 per cent of hinterland traffic, from a 1,000-metres quay with 20 metres alongside.
The terminal, which received its first regular service in February, has an initial annual capacity of 2.7 million TEU, which will increase to 4.5 million TEU, Newark's Journal of Commerce.
This heralds the long anticipated opening of Maasvlakte II, the 5,000-acre tract of reclaimed from the sea to be attended by 500 shipping industry executives and government officials.
Maersk CEO Nils Andersen and APM Terminals CEO Kim Fejfer delivered speeches at the official inauguration of the Danish company's flagship terminal which cost EUR500 million (US$535 million).
