Months-long Manila congestion has prompted APL to temporarily suspend acceptance of shipments there from India.
"Opening up for fresh bookings into Manila will be advised accordingly once roll pool is cleared," APL India said in a notice to customers, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.
The move comes a week after the container shipping arm of Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines, said it would impose congestion surcharges for all cargo, including dry and refrigerated, transported from India to Manila.
With effect from November 15, the planned surcharges were US$250 per TEU and $500 per FEU.
Congestion at Manila has spread to Batangas, one of the ports handling spillover cargo. Maersk said in late October that it will be limiting shipments to Manila port to an "absolute minimum".
The problems at Batangas, located 110 kilometres south of Manila, is collateral damage from still-worsening congestion at Manila that was triggered by a several hour a day ban on trucks on the city's streets that was introduced in February.
The ban was cancelled in September, and fees were imposed on over-staying containers at Manila terminals to clear them out, but the damage had been done.
