ARMED pirates have attacked an unidentified product tanker near Ivory Coast's main port of Abidjan, said a maritime agency and a private security advisor, reports London's Tanker Operator.
This followed two failed pirate attacks the day before off Nigeria's southeastern coast, according to a Reuters report. The 12 pirates stole ship's cash, the crew's money and valuables and escaped.
The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported that the attack occurred at 9.15pm local time 45 nautical miles southeast of the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan, a busy commercial port.
Pirates destroyed navigation equipment, but no crew were injured. A private security advisor who monitors West African piracy confirmed the attack, but a senior Ivorian maritime security man said he was not aware of it.
