BOX volumes on transatlantic trade increased westbound direction in May by double-digit percentages, according to latest figures from Container Trades Statistics.
Total westbound volumes increased 12.6 per cent to 334,200 TEU, the highest monthly year-on-year increase in 2014 so far. During the first five months of the year volumes were up 8.3 per cent year on year to 1.6 million TEU.
Container volumes from northern Europe to North America were up 6.7 per cent for the first five months of the year at 1.1 million TEU.
Eastbound were up also by 5.1 per cent year on year to 243,000 TEU. During the first five months of the year, eastbound traffic increased 1.1 per cent year on year to 1.7 million TEU.
The CTS price index for Europe to North America stood at 92 in May compared to same month 2012 when it registered 95, based on 100 being the average 2008 quarterly.
From North America-Europe, the index decreased to 90 points from 96 in May 2013.
Vessel utilisation levels to the Mediterranean to North America were below 80 per cent, and from northern Europe, load factors remained above 83 per cent forecast the first quarter 2015, according Containerisation International.
