Chinese, German ships collide in North Sea

At 0627 LT Dec 13 2010 in 57 44 N 09 31 E, 20 nm W off Hirtshals, Denmark, collided bulk carrier Cleantec and feeder boxship Frisia Rotterdam. Both vessels were proceeding in the same direction, boxship as a faster one tried to outrun bulk carrier, but something went wrong, exact reason as yet stays unknown.

At 0627 LT Dec 13 2010 in 57 44 N 09 31 E, 20 nm W off Hirtshals, Denmark, collided bulk carrier Cleantec and feeder boxship Frisia Rotterdam. Both vessels were proceeding in the same direction, boxship as a faster one tried to outrun bulk carrier, but something went wrong, exact reason as yet stays unknown. Bulk carrier holed below waterline in Holds 2 and 3 area, water ingress. Vessel listed, and for some time there was possibility of crew evacuation, but later evacuation was called off, vessel limping to safe refuge, anchorage off Skaw. Frisia Rotterdam is to proceed to Bremerhaven, it’s original destination. Cleantec sailed from Klaipeda Lithuania, with 30000 mt fertilizers on board. Frisia Rotterdam got some scratches and dents.

Cleantec IMO 9473418, dwt 33344, built 2009, flag Hong Kong, operator Adani Shipping (China). Frisia Rotterdam  IMO 9299032, dwt 33784, 2478 TEU, built 2004, flag Germany, operator Hartmann Schiffahrts.
