The Luno, a Spanish cargo ship suffering engine failure as she left the port of Bayonne in the French Basque Country, has been washed ashore on a dyke near Anglet. There, pummeled by the waves caused by the bad weather, she broke in two.
The crew, among which at least one sailor is wounded, has been evacuated by helicopter. The rescue operation has been made “very difficult,” according to local authorities,by winds blowing up to 110km/h.The ship wreck lies a few dozen meters away from beaches.
A diesel leak has been spotted, the air allegedly smells like fuel oil, and local authorities have triggered an anti-maritime pollution plan.
General cargo vessel Luno, IMO 9072329, dwt 4635, built 1994, flag Spain, manager MURUETA NAVIERA SA.
How it happened?
The news in Spain speak about electrical blackout. The ship departed yesterday afternoon at 1930 from Pasajes (Spain). She had been moored there during last month (probably repairing or in drydock??). She was bound to Bayonne in ballast (probably to load steel, fertilizers or grain) and she had an electrical blackout. She tried to go inside Bayonne docks when the ship drifted towards breakwater.
The ship is about 4000 dwt coaster, crew 12, two holds and part of Naviera Murueta sa fleet, an old company from Bilbao with many ships and two shipyards.
Some web sites say that there were 11 crew members plus port pilot. Total 12 persons rescued by helicopter.
