11 empty containers fell off the "MOL Maxim" into the Port of Oakland's Outer Harbor in the afternoon of Sep 21, 2017, in the area of berths 25 and 26, along the Outer Harbor Chanel, not far from the Bridge Toll Plaza. The ship had docked in the night in Middle Harbor. The Coast Guard received a report at 2:46 p.m. that the containers had fallen off the ship. The company was able to secure some of the containers. Two were latched to the dock. A third was secured at a separate location. A fourth was on the dock and about five or six of the containers sank on a water depth of 50 feet. Divers were called in the early tomorrow morning of Sep 22 for the salvage of the remaining containers . Besides the Coast Guard, the Bar Pilots Association was notified of the incident so they were aware of the locations of the containers and could help guide vessel traffic. It was unclear what caused the containers to fall from the vessel, and the Coast Guard launched an investigation. The Port of Oakland did not antipate any disruptions of ship traffic.
