”Obez olmak, sağlıklı
olmak demek değildir”
“If Being obese means being built
up; diagnosis would be correct; but
being obese, does not mean to be
healthy.”

SeaNews: Capt. Dandin; how would
you comment on the current outlook
of Turkish Shipping?
Capt. Bülent Dandin:
Contrary to
common perception, I will not prefer to
comment on the development of Turkish
in the shoes of a ship-owner; but if I did
so; I would answer with an analogy as
follows:
If Being obese means being built up;
diagnosis would be correct; but being
obese, does not mean to be healthy.
I will explain the issue as such; tsu-
nami waves formed in 2003-2008 period
began to struck the investors’ coasts in
2009.
Creator of these days are the doyens
(!) who persuaded the credible investors
to rely upon some obese graphs of just 5
years old and to invest in ships.
I think it is essential to read the devel-
opment of shipping through the maritime
industry as a whole; and from that point
of view; industry is just marking time.
What is the percentage of the sec-
tors serving to industry in question that
produce value added services other than
brokerage?
If there are some producing such ser-
vices; how many of them have a market
outside Turkey?
These are the questions to be answered.
The rant economy in shipping is over,
thank goodness, because there isn’t any
non-privatized state property left.
The bourgeois of new manufacturing
sectors will be formed by those who
create
It’s own technology and by this way
give representation to the rest of the
world.
Contrary to what is said, building shell
ships with cheap labor, and equip her
with 70% imported equipment could not
let us say that we are developed.
I think one should read the develop-
ment within this framework: the devel-
opment means to be able to give services
acceptable in the international market
such as manufacturing sector, law, bank-
ing, insurance, agency, chandlery, soft-
ware production, transit, providing tran-
sit fuel, repair and maintenance, port
services at high standards.
It is a huge mistake to read the issue
through the shipowner.
In fact, ship-owning is an issue totally
depending on effectiveness of the power
of country on World Geopolitics, (we
talk about it another time)
But players of the sectors enumer-
ated above are able to continue their
“The rant
economy in
shipping is
over, thank
goodness!”
