The 'Makassar Highway' ran aground in the morning of July 23, 2018, at 7.26 a.m. in the Tjusts archipelago near Loftahammar in Outer Skräddarstapeln off Loftahammar in the Västervik municipality. The ship, enroute from Cuxhaven to Södertälje, was on its way to Södertälje with 1,325 cars on board. The vessel's chief mate, aged 35, has been arrested suspiciously for drinking at the helm. The ship had maintained a steady speed of 14 knots and did not change its wrong course for hours and went straight aground at a depth of 3-4 meters with the bulbous bow protruding from the water. A lot of hydraulic oil leaked out at one of the bow thrusters. The Swedish Coast Guard during the day found nothing that nothing indicated further leakage. Camera equipment was sent from Gothenburg for the Coast Guard's diver from Karlskrona to investigate the hull. The salvage was expected to last a few days. The ship's owner was in dialogue with the insurance companies involved and will present a salvage plan for the Coast Guard and the Transport Agency. At present, the weather conditions on the site were calm and windy. Around twenty people from the Coast Guard were on site. The crew of the car carrier remained safe aboard.
