Switzerland: ABB Gets Long-Term Service Contract from Carnival Corporation

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a long-term service contract from Carnival Corporation to maintain and upgrade ABB’s Azipod equipment over the next 15 years for 20 ships in their fleet, cutting costs by as much as $1 million a year per ship.
Italy: RINA to Verify Ships and Companies for Clean Shipping Index

International classification society RINA has been recognised by Sweden’s Clean Shipping Project as able to verify ships and shipping companies in accordance with verification guidelines developed for ranking in the Clean Shipping Index.

Japan: MOL Completes Drill Based on Fire in LNG Carrier’s Engine Room

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. today announced the completion of a table top drill based on the scenario of a fire in the engine room of the MOL-operated LNG carrier Grand Mereya in Tsugaru Strait, resulting in the vessel running aground. The 1st Regional Coast Guard Headquarters also cooperated in the drill, one of a regular series of events to help MOL prepare for unexpected incidents at sea.

Shipowners are increasingly lax when it comes to upholding 2003 amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention that are designed to prevent engineroom fires, according to a loss prevention circular from Gard.

FIREMEN have yet to determine the cause of a reefer container fire at the Port of Fremantle, south of Perth, Western Australia, which destroyed 11 boxes, most of them empties.
