China's Chenxin Shipping has placed its first vessel order, securing four newbuild containerships as it transitions from slot-sharing to fleet ownership, reports Singapore's Splash 247.
The 2023-founded company has contracted two 4,350-TEU ships and two 1,900-TEU feeders, with delivery expected in 2028. The agreement includes options for four additional vessels of the same sizes. No pricing or delivery slot details were disclosed.
Chenxin has previously operated through slot-sharing arrangements, focusing on routes to the Middle East, India, Pakistan, and the Red Sea. In May last year, it launched a direct service linking major Chinese ports with Turkey and the Red Sea.
Management has identified the Red Sea loop as central to its expansion strategy, with future plans targeting North America, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and North Africa.
The move aligns with broader industry trends, as orders for containerships under 3,000 TEU have risen by 70 per cent year on year. Analysts note that smaller vessels are increasingly favoured for regional trades and geopolitically sensitive markets.
