TRANSPACIFIC rates held steady following a week of rate jumps on trade
lanes from Asia to Europe, and to the US in the first week of 2012,
attributed to re-stocking before the annual factory shutdown of an early Chinese New Year holiday on January 23.
The average rate increased 27.6 per cent to US$400 per FEU on shipments from Hong Kong to Los Angeles by carriers' of the Transpacific Stablisation Agreement, westbound rates remained stable at $1,832 per FEU in the first week of January, according to the Drewry Rate Benchmark.
Drewry's Cleartrade Exchange in Singapore reported an increase of 30.3 per cent in rates during the first week of January.
During the second week the Shanghai Shipping Exchange reported a slight increase on cargo from Asia to Europe of $3 to $733/TEU, according to its Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI).
Again, eastbound rates to US east coast from Asia were up the most by $18 to $2,960 per per FEU compared to week previous of $1,424 per TEU and $2,529 per FEU respectively. Eastbound transpacific spot cargo averaged an increase of $9 per FEU to $1,822 per FEU.
Asia to the Mediterranean rates increased $18 to $772 per TEU compared to December 23 of $536 per TEU and $631 per FEU respectively with average vessel utilisation in the first quarter at an impressive 90 per cent level compared to US west and east coasts which held at 69 per cent and 80 per cent respectively.
