TAIWAN's yang Ming Marine Transport chair Tsai Feng-ming said the company projects its fleet capacity will soar by up to 82 per cent by 2032 under a newly launched expansion plan, reports Taiwan News.
Mr Tsai said Yang Ming's capacity is expected to reach 1.1 to 1.3 million TEU in 2032, up from 711,400 TEU this year. The company ranks 10th globally with a 2.2 per cent market share and operates 98 vessels.
The shipper's programme includes adding 13 full-sized container ships ranging from 8,000 to 15,000 TEU, approved by the board late last year.
He noted that all Yang Ming ships are built in Japan, Korea, or Taiwan, shielding them from US port fees targeting Chinese-linked vessels.
Other Taiwanese carriers are expanding as well. According to Alphaliner statistics, Evergreen Marine leads with 227 ships and 1.81 million TEU of capacity, ranking seventh globally, and has 54 more vessels under construction.
Evergreen ordered 11 dual-fuel ships in February worth nearly NT$100 billion (US$3.31 billion). Wan Hai Lines, ranked 11th, plans to invest TWD26.5 billion in methanol dual-fuel ships and take delivery of 34 new vessels by 2030.
Yang Ming's Premiere Alliance had planned to launch the PS5 (Southwest US) and PN4 (Northwest US) routes this month but delays due to vessel availability and tariff concerns postponed the rollout.
With tariff reductions now in place and volumes expected to rise, the PS5 route between Qingdao and Oakland will begin on June 5.
