A new international air cargo route was launched on Saturday from Urumqi, Xinjiang, to Dubai, enabling direct shipment of fresh produce in under six hours, reports Xinhua.
The inaugural flight carried over 18 tonnes of fruit and vegetables, including melons, tomato products, grapes and dried apples. Previously, shipments from xinjiang to the Middle East relied on sea, land and rail transport, resulting in long transit times and challenges in maintaining freshness.
Zhu Shiqiang, chairman of Xinjiang Fruit Industry Group, said the new route offers faster delivery and better quality control. 'Xinjiang's fruit and vegetables are highly sought after by overseas consumers. As long as quality is ensured, air transport still holds considerable profit potential,' he said.
Xinjiang's agricultural exports currently reach over 10 countries and regions, including Thailand, Kazakhstan and Russia. Additional air cargo routes are planned for Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea and Europe.
The launch of the Urumqi-Dubai route marks a strategic shift in Xinjiang's logistics capabilities, enhancing its role in international agri-food supply chains.
