Wreck removal of Turkish ship "Yusuf Cepnioglu" completed at Mykonos
On Sep 24 the last stage of the removal of the hull of the "Yusuf Cepnioglu" which was partly submerged at the rocky coast of Mykonos at Pharos Armenisti after it ran aground on Mar 7, was completed with the lifting the last part.
The delay was a result mainly of the difficulties, which occurred because of the rocky surroundings. To address this problem, the salvors cut up the hull into pieces.
The removal of polluting materials from the wreck had been completed in a short time, and a large number of containers was recovered and stored in a customs controlled area in Lavrion.
Initially, an attempt had been made to pull off the ship with the aid of tugs, but this method became impossible due to obstacles in the the rocky and increased flooding of the ship. Finally, it was split into three parts. First, a section with a length of 80 meters was removed, followed by the middle section and finally the aft.
