One year after the grounding of the 'Kea Trader' on Durand Reef on July 12, 2017, the local authorities announced that the arrival of heavy equipment to remove the wreckage would not take place until mid-2019. The construction of specific maritime resources was necessary to remove the two sections of the ship which were currently listing 12 resp. 20 degrees. The salvors had access only during 40 percent of time on site due to unfavourable weather conditions. The next port ist 140 miles away, and due to a lack of deck space no helicopters can be used. The Chinese company Shanghai salvage company (SSC) was carrying out a more accurate mapping of the reef, with the debris present, to allow the boats to navigate safely during the operation. Pieces of broken wreckage were to be lifted with air bags and loeaded onto the crane barge 'Ju Li'. Divers were tasked to remove metal fragments and oily fluids. On shore about 399 cubic meters drift goods were collected and disposed of. About 650 workers had spent 26.000 hours on the task to clean isolated beaches and bights in the surrounding areas.
