LOCAL women will do most of the heavy lifting at DP World's new Jebel Ali terminal when 50 automated rail-mounted gantry cranes go into operation.
DP World said all was on track in equipping Jebel Ali terminal after the arrival of five quay cranes of the 98 on order and half of its 19 ship-to-shore quay cranes before initial operations begin.
The five new STS quay cranes that stand at 138 metres high at full boom extension from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries will join four cranes which were installed earlier in December.
Twenty automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (ARMG) are also moving on the 70-hectare yard to one day build the terminal to four million TEU capacity with potential to raise it to 19 million TEU.
The new cranes, equipped with smart mobile applications, have an outreach of 25 container rows of next generation ULCs. Each will have a 69.5-metre lifting height and extended reach.
"The terminal has an advanced Gate Automation system that will strengthen its position as the most efficient gateway in the region with the capability of handling the largest vessels," said DP World operations Mohammed Ali Ahmed.
