THE vizhinjam International Seaport has reached a significant milestone, handling 400,000 TEU of cargo since the port's trial run commenced in July 2024, reports Chennai's Hindu daily.
A total of 202 ships have berthed at the port, with 150,000 TEU processed during the trial period and the remaining 250,000 TEU handled after the start of commercial operations on December 3.
Meanwhile, Dubai-based Sharaf Group has committed to develop an Inland Container Terminal at Vizhinjam.
This follows the commitment made during the Vizhinjam Conclave in Thiruvananthapuram in January, which has now translated into Expressions of Interest (EOI) at Invest Kerala.
Construction will begin once the government allocates the required land. Sharaf Group, which operates one of India's largest Inland Container Depots (ICDs) in New Delhi, spanning 110 acres with a network of 47 rail connections, is expected to attract further international investment to Vizhinjam.
