THE Virginia Port Authority's (VPA) posted an 8.8 per cent increase in July container volume - the best July in the port's history - to 226,000 TEU year on year, reported the Virginian-Pilot.
"We started fiscal year 2016 with the highest volumes in total containers and total rail containers for the month of July in the port's history," said John Reinhart, the authority's CEO and executive director, in a statement.
"We are beginning to process the volumes associated with the coming retail season, and we anticipate this trend continuing through November," said VPA chief executive John Reinhart.
July marked the fifth consecutive month of volumes exceeding 210,000 TEU. In May, the port posted an all-time high of 230,511 TEU.
Mr Reinhart said in June that the port anticipates cargo volume topping May's record as the busy peak season unfolds.
Intermodal volume at the port in July grew 15 per cent from a year earlier - the second-highest month on record for total rail containers moved. Truck-container volume was up by 6.3 per cent.
Year-to-date truck-container volume grew a little more than rail volume at the port: 12.1 per cent vs 9.1 per cent.
For the first 11 months of the recently ended fiscal year, the ports of New York/New Jersey; Savannah, Charleston, SC; Baltimore; and Wilmington, NC, all saw year-on-year gains in box volume, according to a presentation at the authority's July board meeting.
Mr Reinhart said the port is focused "on continuing to refine our operation, delivering consistent service at the gates and moving forward on the capital spending plan for fiscal year 2016."
