The Maritime Captaincy had detained the "Alsterstern" in Vigo until inumerous deficiencies detected on board and posing a danger to the safety of the ship's navigation and safety of future hydrocarbon cargo operations as well as for the marine environment or its crew on board have been rectified. The tanker had been towed to port on Feb 2, where engine repairs were carried out after the ship had gone adrift 70 miles west of Ons. But aninspection carried out by technicians of the Maritime Captaincy of Vigo has detected numerous security deficiencies last week. The ship was unloaded and free of toxic or dangerous gases. The captain, Daniel Blanchard from Canada, was confident that the technical deficiencies would be remedied soon, but the repairs of faults discovered by the MOU inspectors were expected to keep him at least one more week at the Areal pier.
