The "Gral San Martin" remained moored at the Terminal Exporter of Vehicles (TEV), at Guarujá in the Port of Santos since Monday the engine room was flooded on Apr 3, 2017. The ship with a crew of 17 had arrived at 12:50 p.m and was due to sail at 11:00 a.m. the same day. The São Paulo Harbor Authority (CPSP) was notified of the flooding when the vessel was preparing to leave the port. Experts and an inspector were sent to the site and found the partial flooding of the lower compartment. The initial suspicion was that a crack in the hull of the vessel had caused the water to enter. A ssible maneuvering error of the valves was also considered. The Navy of Brazil opened a survey with an initial deadline of 90 days. Despite the flooding the "Gral San Martin" was stable and safe but without ability to operate, since the compartment was still partially submerged. The water has not been removed from the site as it was mixed with fuel oil. The procedure for emptying the engine room will be carried out with the help of barges, according to Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp), the Port Authority of Santos. Two foreign technicians, one Dutch and one German, were aboard the ship. The arrival of the superintendent of the shipowner's fleet was also awaited. He was to assist in the emptying of water and repairs as well as the operational resumption of the ship, which had no deadline to leave the dock. Technicians from the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) have verified that there was no evidence of environmental damage for the time being. As a precaution, containment barriers were placed around the freighter and specialized teams remained on duty monitoring the site. The ship had unloaded 355 vehicles in Santos at the Vehicle Export Terminal (TEV, located next to the Container Terminal with 572 vehicles remaining, two of which are destined for the Port of Rio de Janeiro, the next destination, and the other 570 for the Port of Paranaguá.
