IMPORTED containers into the US increased two per cent in September to 1.64 million TEU over the previous month, according to Minnesota-based trade intelligence company, Zepol Corporation.
September's total was also was a seven per cent year on year increase, and surpassed August as the second highest month for imports in 2013.
"This is an unusually large import volume for September," said Zepol CEO Paul Rasmussen, "US companies may have added an extra month of prep for the holidays this year."
September Asian ocean imports were up 3.6 per cent from August, with China accounting for 46 per cent. South Korea saw a 12.8 per cent increase, but European volumes fell 4.6 per cent.
The Port of Los Angeles saw imports increase 11.8 per cent in September, bringing in almost 40,000 more TEU compared to August. Tacoma handled 15 per cent more than in the previous month.
Maersk Line carried the most of the import volume, increasing its share from August six per cent to 118,000 TEU in September. Evergreen posted an eight per cent increase to 90,000 TEU.
