US PIERS data shows that exports of recyclable waste has found to new markets, but nothing to match the China market that was forcibly shut down by Beijing from January 1.
At its peak, in 2016 China took just short of one million TEU - though London's Drewry Maritime Research puts it at four to five million TEU - which by the end of 2017 had fallen 21.6 per cent, a decline of 215,583 TEU, reported IHS Media.
Since the ban threat, competing markets all told took in 150,000 TEU. Runner up India saw volume rise 4.9 per cent to 85,013 TEU, Vietnam, the No 3 market where traffic surged 239 per cent to 33,300 TEU. Malaysia is another destination up 281.3 per cent to 12,397 TEU. Taiwan also up 36.7 per cent to 18,377 TEU.
Some 80 per cent of the waste product volume that enters China is from the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
But not all container lines saw a decline in their volume of US recyclable exports. Cosco increased volume 7.9 per cent to 128,775 TEU, even when China Shipping Container Lines is included in the 2016 figures for comparison.
CMA CGM-APL grew 7.2 per cent to 184,023 TEU, while OOCL increased volume 5.9 per cent to 44,038. HMM was buoyed by Hanjin and increased its US recyclable material exports 63.7 per cent to 45,791 TEU.
Others posted losses, led by 48.7 per cent at Hapag-Lloyd, which moved 36,703 TEU of recyclable waste in 2017, followed by the 35.1 per cent drop at Maersk-Hamburg Sud to 132,655 TEU and 'K' Line, which was down 31.1 per cent to 32,964 TEU. Yang Ming was down 27.2 per cent to 27,722 TEU; Evergreen was flat at 0.1 per cent to 126,351 TEU.
