US military cargo vessel "USNS Sgt. Matej Kocak" aground off Okinawa
On Jan 22, 2015, at 11.30 a.m. the USNS "Sgt. Matej Kocak" ran aground six miles off Uruma port in the Kinbu Bay at the eastern Okinawa coast. There were 38 civilian crew, 67 army personnel and 26 mariners on board. Tugs were on scene stabilizing the vessel and assessing the situation. The ship sustained some hull damage, though the extent was still being evaluated. A manageable amount of water was leaking into the ship. A landing craft utility ship was on scene if an evacuation of the 131 crew was needed. High tide in the evening of Jan 22 did not refloat vesssel. Military experts on groundings were headed to the scene on Jan 23, while divers were assessing the situation.
