Washington has announced sweeping sanctions on over 115 Iran-linked individuals, entities and vessels, targeting Tehran's oil network and its foreign backers, reported Reuters.
The us Treasury revealed sanctions against shipping interests controlled by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, son of former adviser Ali Shamkhani. His operations reportedly span 17 countries and generate billions to support Iran's regime.
The measures hit 15 shipping firms, 52 vessels, 12 individuals and 53 entities in nations from Panama to Hong Kong. The action follows the bombing of Iranian nuclear sites in June and is the most significant Iran-related move since 2018.
A US official said the crackdown would curb Iranian oil exports further, already down to 1.2 million barrels per day from 1.8 million earlier this year. The official added that further pressure is planned.
Iran's foreign ministry condemned the sanctions, calling them hostile and damaging to the country's economic welfare. The European Union also sanctioned Mr Shamkhani in July over his alleged role in Russian oil trade.
Mr Shamkhani was previously sanctioned in 2020. US officials stated the latest measures, while also affecting Russia, are focused primarily on Iran.
