US imports increase 2pc in July, biggest advance since 2007, Zepol reports
MINNEAPOLIS trade intelligence firm Zepol Corporation reports that US imports posted a two per cent year-on-year increase in July to 1.69 million TEU, the highest volume since July 2007, and up 13 per cent on June.
"This year has not seen a rise in imports from 2012, although 2013 may be a stronger year in terms of holiday business," said Zepol CEO Paul Rasmussen. "July and August are the two busiest months as American retailers prep for the holidays and July had a much higher import volume than expected."
Asian exports, more specifically those from China, which make up more than half the imports from Asia, have increased container volume 12 per cent from June and two per cent from July of last year.
Chinese imports to the US in July totalled 779,000 TEU and have not been this high since August 2011.
European imports to the US were 18 per cent higher than last month. Germany, making up nearly 25 per cent of Europe contribution, has increased by 10,000 TEU from June, which amounts to over 50,000 TEU in July.
Los Angeles experienced a 13 per cent volume increase from June to July. New York-New Jersey increased July import volume 22 per cent from June. Norfolk, Virginia, June to July volumes were up 26 per cent.
The top 20 ocean carriers posted a rise in TEU volume from June to July. Maersk rose from June by nearly 19 per cent and MSC was up 17 per cent. APL increased 13 per cent and Evergreen was up 4.5 per cent.
