US CONTAINER exports fell 15 per cent year on year in January as the west coast labour strife, a high dollar and sluggish overseas demand, depressed markets, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.
US laden export boxes fell 8.9 per cent to 921,804 TEU, according to PIERS data, which also recorded exports off the east coast were 445,449 TEU in January while exports from the west coast were a paltry 269,275 TEU.
Big transpacific carriers were hit hardest. "They had lower than expected volumes while carriers with little west coast presence saw little or no effect," said PIERS analyst Quentin Stenger.
"Exports are only 13 per cent of the US economy, but growing slowly, largely because growth is weak overseas and the dollar is rising," said IHS economist Nariman Behravesh.
