MOST of the cargo on Hanjin Shipping container ships has been unloaded at ports, but some of the cargo still hasn't reached its final destination yet.
The South Korean government is focusing on follow-up measures to end the disruption to maritime cargo transport. The finance ministry and the maritime ministry held a joint briefing recently regarding how the chaos over the troubled shipping line is being resolved, The Korean Times reported.
According to the government, 95.5 per cent of the 396,000 TEU cargo on Hanjin's container ships has been unloaded. Among them, however, 35,000 TEU haven't reached customers yet. The rest, 4.5 per cent, or 18,000 TEU, are also still being delivered or waiting for transfer. It means over 50,000 TEU cargo haven't reached their final destination yet.
"Basically, the issue should be resolved between the cargo owners and Hanjin Shipping. However, the government will support smooth delivery of the cargo," the government noted in a release to the media. It added that it will consult with port authorities overseas as well as logistic agencies for the delivery.
The ships seized by creditors are also problematic. Among 97 container ships of Hanjin Shipping, 94 completed unloading cargo. Among the remaining three, one will unload at a port overseas while two will unload in Korea. The two ships, Hanjin China and Hanjin Vienna, however, have been seized in China and Canada by creditors. A total of five ships have been seized including ships that completed unloading of cargo.
"The government will consider public auction of Hanjin Shipping-owned ships after consultation with the court," said Vice Maritime Minister Yoon Hak-bae.
The government also said that it provided KRW 344.5 billion (US$300 million) financial support for Hanjin's suppliers as well as small cargo owners damaged by the disruption, such as extending maturity of their loans.
