UNION Pacific railroad has raised the frequency of its "premium" intermodal service to Chicago beginning in Portland and north California, driven by the growing need for "truck-competitive service between western US markets and Chicago".
The Portland service now operates five times each week to Chicago with six return trips. From northern California, the intermodal service will make between five and seven trips to Chicago each week.
The leading railway operator has also been strengthening its infrastructure in the middle of the country after investing US$11 million in the project slated for completion by the end of August.
The improvement works include replacing track and switches, and renewing crossing surfaces near Eau Claire, Wisconsin and between Black River Falls and Wyeville, reported the American Shipper.
