UN labour convention breaches result in 113 ship detentions in12 months
IN the first year of enforcement, 133 have been detained by inspectors under United Nations' Maritime Labour Convention for substandard working conditions at ports in signatory countries of the Paris Memorandum of Understanding.
These states include Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Malta and the UK.
Detainable deficiencies were over payment of wages (39.5 per cent), manning levels (28.6 per cent), health, safety and accident prevention (43.1 per cent), food and catering (15.4 per cent) and accommodation (10 per cent), reported London's Tanker Operator.
