A BRITISH parliamentary committee seeks a garment trade adjudicator after allegations that the retail fashion industry is paying less than minimum wage, reports Bloomberg.
The move could potentially help prevent fashion brands from putting pressure on suppliers to cut corners on pay and working conditions.
'Purchasing a garment with a 'Made in the UK' label ought to be a guarantee that workers who produced it are paid the minimum wage in a workplace which is safe. We found that it is not,' said Environmental Audit Committee chairman Philip Dunne.
Factories in Leicester that supply Boohoo Group were allegedly paying less than minimum wage in unsafe working conditions.
Although an independent review cleared Boohoo of any direct involvement, the report's author declared the company had prioritised profit and growth, ignoring concerns about labour violations.
Liberty Shared, a charity against modern-day slavery, petitioned US Customs and Border Protection to ban clothing imports from Boohoo and most factories in Leicester.
