Sanmar Invests to Expand Portfolio
Sanmar, recognised as being amongst the leading specialist tug constructors worldwide has invested in another shipyard. Expected to be open by early 2015, the new yard is located in Altinova Yalova city, currently 75 minutes by car and ferry away from Tuzla where Sanmar’s existing modern custom built shipyard is located.
However, a new bridge is already under construction and this will connect both sides of Izmit Bay – shortening the journey time from Tuzla to Altinova to less than 25 minutes. Nearly half the new shipyard, some 23,500m2 will comprise a covered and closed production area designed to achieve totally enclosed construction.
At its heart there will be two final production halls adjacent to each other. One of the halls is to have dimensions of 18m x 120m x 26m and will also have a total overhead lifting capacity of 128 tons. Vessels having an overall beam of up to 17m will be able to be built in this closed hall.
The second production hall is mainly for larger vessels and will measure 30m x 120m x 32m which will enable Sanmar to build vessels having an overall beam up to 27.5m. In addition to the enclosed production halls there will also be a conventional type shipbuilding line 40m wide by 300m length with gantry cranes on top totalling 300 tons.
The infrastructure will be designed using the latest technology to ensure the maximum standards of health and safety and respecting the needs of the environment. Sanmar aims to be the ‘greenest’ shipyard in Turkey. In its current shipyard (which is to remain in full production) Sanmar builds high quality and specialised tugboats.
When the new yard is up and running the company intends to extend its scope with the construction of more sophisticated vessels adding to its already extensive portfolio of tugboats with AHTSs, PSVs, offshore construction vessels, and those using alternative fuels such as LNG, for which it has already built a fine reputation.
