US President Donald trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke by phone for the first time in three months, easing tensions and agreeing to meet in South Korea in five weeks to discuss trade, illicit drugs and the war in Ukraine, reported Reuters.
Trump said the two leaders made progress on a TikTok agreement, though it was unclear whether a final deal had been reached. The call marked a shift in tone between Washington and Beijing following months of strained relations.
The leaders agreed to hold further discussions on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which begins on October 31 in Gyeongju, South Korea.
Trump announced plans to visit China early next year, with Xi expected to travel to the US at a later date. Reuters had earlier reported that both sides were preparing for such exchanges.
'He approved the TikTok deal,' Mr Trump said in the Oval Office, noting that a formal signing could still take place. 'The TikTok deal is well on its way,' he added.
